38. Frederick Kaufman STIFFLER

CONTROVERSY REGARDING NAME OF FREDERICK'S WIFE

Joan M. Kilian, 2008 Summer Ridge Drive, Augusta, GA, 30901, in April 2001, sent me a copy of a manuscript compiled by her great-grand-aunt, Blanche [surname?], a daughter of Reuben Patrick and Elizabeth McCormick; Elizabeth being a daughter of William McCormick and Catherine Stiffler; Catherine being a daughter of Frederick Stiffler and -- so Blanche stated -- Rachel Beard. Not Mary Hay. Blanche would have been a great-granddaughter of Frederick Stiffler, so this is the closest documentation I have uncovered that differs from the common assertion that Frederick married Mary Hay. It is still possible that he was married to a Mary Hay, but also possible that he was married more than once before his marriage to Susannah Croyle.

Also, the following reference may apply to a Rachel, wife of Frederick Stiffler. Need to verify that this is the correct person.

Bedford, PA "Gazette" 1843

30 December, died Mrs. Rachel Stiffler, age 59, Blue Knob

The surname Beard would account for the middle initial B in two of Frederick Stiffler's sons, Joseph B. and Michael B. Stiffler. It is also noteworthy that Michael B. Stiffler's eldest daughter was named Rachel B. Stiffler.

However, Mrs. L.W. Ray, the informant for the death certificate of Frederick Stiffler's daughter Mary (Stiffler) Roudebush, gives "Mary Stiffler" as the maiden name of Mary's mother.
